Amazing weather calls for amazing adventures. This past weekend I grouped together three friends and we made our way to Du Toit’s Kloof to do the river trail. I’ve done this path twice before and it still ranks as one of my top paths, hands down. Basically the entire trail is crossing a river over rocks, and even when you’re on the trail you’re balancing on something. It definitely brings out the kid in you.
We started the trail just after 9am, aiming to catch some sun at the rock pool by the time we got there. None of my adventurer friends had ever been on this route so they were all continually pleasantly surprised. The scenery is breathtaking, and the river water crystal clear. As you get further down the route, you come to a section where you use chains to climb up a smaller waterfall. Not for the faint hearted, but well worth the increased adrenaline.
Just around the climb you arrive at the main attraction: a massive waterfall, filling a rock pool with some jumps included. Absolutely breathtaking.
Now, it’s becoming tradition that I do the higher jump into the rock pool on every visit. It’s pretty high, but more frightening is the water temperature. I like warmth, and when the water is around 4 degrees I feel death approaching. Tradition can’t be broken though, so I made the jump and as soon as I could I started swimming to shore. Next time, everyone should bring wetsuits and then we can actually enjoy the amazing rock pool regardless of water temperature.
We made our way back to the start, stopping along the way to relax and enjoy the amazing vibe. All in all it took around 4 hours of super chilled hiking and lots of “enjoying the scenery”. Highly recommended hike.
Has anyone else out there done Krom Rivier? I would love to hear your thoughts on the hike and if anyone dared to jump at the end 🙂
