Top five trails in Gauteng

Kyle Redelinghuys

Over the past year I've done quite a few hikes and runs in Gauteng. This province has loads to offer, so here are my favourite five I have done so far!

Suikerbosrand

Suikerbos is one of my favourite places to go from Johannesburg. A short drive from the city and it feels like you are hours away from civilization. The trail is 11km, or you can go off trail and do some fantastic exploring.

Klipriviersberg

Another amazing and close nature reserve. I love the trails here for their difficulty and variety. For a relatively small reserve, there are a decent number of different routes and loads of wildlife.

Kranskloof

One of my favourite hikes in South Africa, mainly due to the variety of the trail: plain trekking, decent elevation and an absolutely fantastic gorge. This trail definitely has an adventure element.

Hennops

An awesome hike in the Magaliesberg, complete with a pulley over a river. Loads of fun, great views and an easy hike.

Groenkloof

Located in Pretoria, this reserve offers some fantastic views and flora. The route makes for a great training ground, and is the location for one of the Trail Series races.

So next time when you are wondering where to go for a quick nature fix, head to one of these trails! Enjoy :)
