SA Trail Championships at Molweni

Kyle Redelinghuys

The Molweni Trail Run is a fantastic race held annually in Kwa-Zulu Natal, and after the success of last year the event has been awarded the South African Trail Championships for 2015! The 2-day trail race has a 7km prologue on Saturday 2nd May and a 32km solo run on Sunday 3rd May. There are significant climbs in and out of the valley, with a total altitude gain of just under 2000m - definitely a challenge! In addition there are some technical sections that require some form of scrambling.

This year’s event will also include an 8km fun trail run on Sunday 3rd May and an upgrade of the mini-Molweni, ensuring there is fun and entertainment for the whole family. The Molweni Trail Run works closely with the community for conservancy of the reserve and surrounding areas, with Krantzkloof reserve being a direct beneficiary of the event.

From the press release:

There are core and strategic partnerships that allow the event to be a success. New partners this year will be the Durban Green Corridor who are extending their efforts and trail building network into the areas traversed by the runners.  The linking of trails with the race route and the work done by Kloof Conservancy in the Molweni River Community Park makes perfect sense and adds value to the work done by them.  Anna da Graca (Marketing Manager at DGC) “The development of this event partnership was very natural and organic for two reasons. Firstly, Durban Green Corridor offers exceptional trail running routes along the Umngeni River Valley from Valley of a Thousand Hills to Inanda Dam and all the way to the Umngeni River Estuary and we are constantly seeking to build upon this network of trails. We welcome with open arms such an established and recognised trail running event in the valley. Secondly, and most importantly, we work directly with local communities in the valley to create opportunities for them through employment within the tourism, leisure and sports sectors. This event is a wonderful opportunity for the local communities to be involved and to benefit.”
