Paarl Rock and surrounds

Kyle Redelinghuys

At the end of December I went up a little road trip to Paarl to go hike up Paarl Rock. After driving very carefully (not sure how my Corsa handled that) we headed off to the heritage site. Standing on top of Paarl Rock gives a birds eye view of the town. We then drove to the second, bigger set of rocks. These rocks are all super smooth, so climbing up them presents a difficulty at times. There are no holes to steady your feet on, and nothing to grab with your hands. Method is to just go up slowly and at an angle.

When we got near the top, we followed a chain ladder up onto the peak. 360 degree views of the city and surrounds, and we could even see Table Mountain. After enjoying the view we followed a second path down which seemed to lead to a lake at the bottom. There were many, many steps through a forest leading down to there and was amazing.

If you ever go to Paarl, make sure to head up and do the hike.
